What Is a Super Target?
A Super Target is a larger Target store offering a wider variety of products and services, including produce, deli items, meat, banking services, expanded restaurant areas, photo studios, and even health clinics.
You may remember Target Greatland stores, which were first opened in 1990.
These predecessors of the Super Target were designed to be 50% larger than regular Target stores and featured innovations including wider aisles, faster checkout lanes, ATMs, price scanners, and expanded pharmacy and photo services.
And then the first Super Target was opened in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1995.
It was designed to combine the size and selection of a Target Greatland store with an upscale grocery section called Archer Farms Market.
The first Super Target introduced several exciting additions to the Target landscape at the time, including a pharmacy, floral shop, bank, portrait studio, and photo laboratory.
The first Super Target was 192,000 square feet, with 125,000 square feet allocated for general merchandise and 62,000 square feet dedicated to grocery items.
For comparison, a standard Target store measures around 130,000 square feet, and at the time, many Target stores were even smaller.
According to several resources, there are 239 Super Target locations in the United States

Where Are Super Targets Located?
Although there are over 1,900 Targets in the United States, located in all 50 states, there are only 239 Super Targets, which are only available in select locations.
States with Super Targets include:
- North Carolina
What Is the Difference Between Target and Super Target?
The main difference is that Super Target stores are larger than regular Target stores and offer a greater selection of products and services.
The average Target store measures about 130,000 square feet.
In contrast, the average Super Target is around 175,000 square feet, although some are even larger.
Super Targets were designed to offer a larger selection of grocery products, including organic produce, deli and fresh meats, and bakery items.
Super Targets also offer additional services, including banking, florists, portrait services, photo laboratory services, expanded pharmacy services, health clinics, and larger restaurant areas, featuring dining options like Starbucks and Target Cafe.
Because Super Target stores are larger than regular Target stores, they also have room to stock a greater number and variety of products in their general merchandise section, giving shoppers more options to choose from.
Do Super Targets Still Exist?
While Super Target stores still exist across the United States, the Target Corporation has branded all stores as “Target” since 2015.
In 2015, the Target Corporation announced that it was going to stop using different branding for several types of Target stores, including CityTarget, and TargetExpress.
All the stores that opened under these different brandings were still going to remain in operation, but they were all going to be branded as “Target,” no matter their size, location, or offerings.
If you live near a Super Target, you may notice that the store has the “Super Target” sign.
However, technically all Target stores are now branded as “Targets.”
If you’re looking for the nearest Target to find a specific service or shop from a specific department, there is still an easy way to find what you’re looking for.
Just visit the Target website and navigate to the store locator.
Then, you can enter your zip code, city, or state to find all the Target stores near you.
The store locator allows you to filter your results by service, so you’ll be able to find the store near you that has the service or department you’re looking for.
These services include:
- Accepts WIC
- Apple Experience
- Cell Phone Activation Counter
- Disney Store at Target
- Drive Up
- Ear Piercing
- Fresh Grocery
- Ulta Beauty at Target

In contrast, the smallest Target store is located in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The Wicker Park Target measures only 12,800 square feet.
What State Has the Most Target Stores?
California has the most Target stores.
There are over 1,900 Target stores in the United States, located in all 50 states and Washington DC.
California has the most Target stores out of all the states, boasting 311 locations, or 16% of all Target stores in America.
The state with the next most Target stores is Texas, with 153 locations, or 7% of all Target stores.

Super Targets exist across the United States, providing the same wide array of products and services. However, regardless of your local Target’s size, location, offerings, or former branding, it now falls under the overarching “Target” branding.
