The Best Store-Bought Ice Cream Sandwiches

Ice cream sandwiches are truly one of the most beloved desserts. The most popular iteration is the rectangular kind with chocolate wafers on the outside and vanilla ice cream inside, but they come in all shapes, sizes, and flavors.

Today, we’ll demystify the world of ice cream cookie sandwiches, and I’ll tell you about my 15 favorite ice cream sandwich brands of all time.

I’ll also rank them from worst to best so you’ll know exactly where to start next time you enter the dessert aisle. Let’s get started!

15. Entenmann’s Chocolatey Glazed Cookie Donut Salted Caramel Ice Cream Sandwich

I don’t know what took Entenmann’s, the famous baked goods brand, so long to throw their hat in the ice cream ring, but I’m glad they did.

Their Chocolatey Glazed Cookie Donut Salted Caramel ice cream sandwich is quite delicious despite its long name.

These ice cream sandwiches came out recently, in mid-2023, and are made with salted caramel ice cream sandwiched between two moist, sweet donut cookies.

The top donut cookie is dipped in a chocolate glaze. Well, that’s how they’re supposed to taste in theory, anyway.

I’ve only tried these ice cream sandwiches once, and I thought they were pretty darn good, especially the donut cookies used as the outside of the sandwich.

But the reason I didn’t rank these any higher is that I seem to be in the minority of people who got a good batch.

Many reviews complain the cookies themselves are rock solid, while the ice cream is too soft, making it almost impossible to get a good bite without the ice cream spilling out everywhere.

So, while I thought these chocolate glazed cookie donut ice cream sandwiches were good, beware that you may get a disappointing batch.

14. Blue Bunny S’mores Ice Cream Sandwich

I’m not the biggest fan of Blue Bunny ice cream. The main reason is that their ice cream technically isn’t real ice cream (more on that in our best ice cream brands article).

But I’ll be the first to admit that their s’mores sandwiches are pretty darn good.

These ice cream sandwiches feature a marshmallow frozen dairy dessert with swirls of fudge throughout.

Graham crackers act as the “bread” for this sandwich.

The filling here is perfectly sweet and doesn’t have the cloying sugar flavor many marshmallow products tend to have.

The fudge swirl is also great, but I just wish there was more of it to give the ice cream sandwich that full s’mores flavor (after all, the chocolate’s the best part of a s’more, right?).

The graham crackers here are much softer than the regular graham crackers, which I enjoy because it keeps the dessert still feeling like an ice cream sandwich.

The ice cream inside is also super light and fluffy, which makes it even more reminiscent of real marshmallows.

13. Skinny Cow Vanilla Gone Wild Ice Cream Sandwich

I think Skinny Cow gets a bad rap overall because people think of it as an ice cream that someone on a diet would eat.

I definitely understand where they’re coming from, but Skinny Cow’s ice cream sandwiches are actually quite good.

These start off with two circular chocolate cookies that are sweet and moist. Inside is a scoop of velvety, fluffy vanilla ice cream.

These are pretty standard when it comes to ice cream sandwiches – they won’t change your life, but they’re super yummy and hit the spot when you’re craving something sweet and nostalgic.

Something to note, however, is that these ice cream sandwiches contain around the same calories as most other products on our list, so don’t feel like you’re getting the “healthiest” ice cream option just because the product has the word “skinny” in it.

12. Blue Bunny BIG Double Strawberry Ice Cream Sandwich

When it comes to ice cream sandwiches, Blue Bunny obviously knows what it’s doing.

The BIG Double Strawberry comes with two vanilla-flavored wafers, which hold a generous portion of strawberry frozen dessert and swirls of strawberry sauce.

As far as the inside of an ice cream sandwich goes, this is one of the biggest portions on today’s countdown.

The frozen dessert (which, again, can’t “technically” be referred to as ice cream) has real strawberry puree in it, so it has the perfect balance of sweet artificial strawberry and bright, fruity real strawberry.

Many ice cream sandwiches use chocolate wafers on the outside, so having a vanilla wafer on this one is a fun, sweet change.

11. M&M’s Cookies & Cream Ice Cream Sandwich

Plenty of us, including myself, grew up eating M&M’s ice cream sandwiches – we’ll get into those soon, I promise.

But for now, did you know that the brand also has a newer take on its classic ice cream sandwich?

It’s filled with cookies and cream ice cream, features two chocolate cookies with M&Ms baked inside, and is absolutely delicious.

M&M’s released their cookies and cream ice cream sandwich in early 2023.

The ice cream used is fairly light and fluffy, and the cookies are chewy, making these sandwiches super easy to eat.

In other words, you won’t risk breaking a tooth when you grab one of these from the freezer.

The M&Ms here add a fun crunch to the sandwich, and the chocolate cookies are super chocolatey (very insightful, I know).

But seriously, these sandwiches are packed with chocolate flavor, so if that’s your thing, give these a try.

10. Klondike Classic Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich

Just like Skinny Cow, Klondike’s take on the ice cream sandwich is as classic as it gets.

This dessert starts with two square chocolate wafers, which hold a thick square of vanilla ice cream inside.

I really like the chocolate wafers on this sandwich – they are just the right thickness and are sweet without being overly sugary.

The ice cream itself tastes really high quality. It’s creamy, rich, and velvety.

If you’re looking for a classic ice cream sandwich that isn’t fancy but does each element extremely well, I recommend you go with Klondike’s Classic Vanilla Sandwich.

9. So Delicious Coconutmilk Vanilla Bean Sandwiches

So Delicious is known for its dairy-free ice cream. They use alternatives like almond milk and cashew milk, but I think their coconut milk desserts tend to be the tastiest.

Their Coconutmilk Vanilla Bean sandwiches are filled with vanilla ice cream made from coconut milk, which has a mostly vanilla flavor with “just” a hint of coconut flavor.

If you don’t like coconut, don’t worry because the flavor isn’t strong at all. You’ll mostly taste the vanilla here.

The chocolate wafers on the outside are rectangular and taste like all the other chocolate wafers on the market – nothing mind-blowing, but still tasty and a great pairing for the vanilla ice cream.

Just something to note: these are definitely smaller than the rest of the sandwiches on our list.

8. Great Value Neapolitan Ice Cream Sandwich

Great Value’s Neapolitan ice cream sandwich is just like a classic ice cream sandwich but with strawberry and chocolate ice cream in addition to the usual vanilla.

With this bar, you’re basically getting three separate miniature bars in one.

That’s because the three flavors are completely divided from each other underneath the chocolate wafers, so you get to enjoy a strawberry-chocolate combo, vanilla-chocolate combo, and chocolate-chocolate combo.

The strawberry part of this bar is my favorite. It brings just a bit of fruit brightness, and that, combined with the semisweet chocolate ice cream, balances out the sweet vanilla ice cream perfectly.

7. Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean and Double Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich

Turkey Hill’s vanilla bean ice cream is front and center in this dessert sandwich.

It has flecks of real vanilla bean in it, which brings an overall high-quality feel to the ice cream sandwich.

The cookies bring a double hit of chocolate with the base, and the chunks inside have a dark chocolatey flavor.

The cookies have that fresh-baked feel and texture to them, with crispy outer edges and a soft, fudgy middle.

They’re not cloying – the chocolate is more semisweet, and the slight bitterness there brings out the natural sweetness of the vanilla bean ice cream.

6. M&M’s Vanilla Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich

Were these ice cream sandwiches a staple of anyone else’s childhood?

These colorful treats are made with two vanilla cookies dotted with M&M’s and a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the middle.

These sandwiches were made for vanilla lovers. The vanilla cookies are sweet and soft.

The ice cream is fluffy and has the perfect amount of vanilla flavor.

In this case, the cookies are the star of the show rather than the ice cream.

The M&M’s bring just the right crunch and chocolate note to the sandwich.

5. FatBoy Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich

This ice cream sandwich is perfect for those who like the ice cream part more than the sandwich part.

That’s because FatBoy’s sandwiches contain an ice-cream-to-wafer ratio that’s much heavier on the ice cream.

The brand has a couple of ice cream sandwich flavors (their sugar cookie flavor is an honorable mention), but my favorite is their original, with chocolate wafers and vanilla ice cream.

The ice cream that FatBoy uses is consistently thick and creamy, which makes for a sandwich that feels like a real treat.

This is one of the best ice cream sandwiches because it truly understands what most people are eating it for (and that’s the ice cream).

4. Tillamook Peanut Butter Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich

Tillamook is beloved for its super-creamy, consistently high-quality ice cream.

While their pints are the most popular in their lineup, Tillamook’s lesser-known ice cream sandwiches definitely have a cult following.

My favorite ice cream sandwich from Tillamook is the peanut butter chocolate flavor.

The outside of the sandwich is made with two flattened pieces of chocolate waffle cone.

The ice cream is peanut butter with swirls of chocolate throughout.

Unlike most other ice cream sandwiches, the wafers on this one stay fairly crispy, especially considering they’ve been frozen for however long.

Tillamook’s peanut butter ice cream shines through in this dessert – it’s smooth and creamy, and the flavor has just the right amount of salt in it.

3. Aldi Stroopwafel Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich

If you’ve never heard of them, stroopwafels are a popular Dutch cookie made with two layers of sweet, thin cookie in a waffle-like pattern, which holds together a caramel filling.

In the case of Aldi’s stroopwafel ice cream sandwich, the top and bottom are made with traditional stroopwafel, and in the middle is a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

This is one of the best store-bought ice cream sandwiches for two reasons.

First, the ice cream itself is incredibly high quality. It’s smooth, creamy, and intensely rich.

And secondly, the stroopwafels make the perfect vessel for the ice cream. They’re crispy on the outside with a slight chew from the caramel.

This dessert sandwich is just sweet enough, with the perfect balance between caramel and vanilla.

Aldi’s specialty products rotate in and out quite frequently, so be sure to check for their stroopwafel ice cream sandwich as soon as you can.

2. Klondike Cookies & Creme Ice Cream Sandwich

Have you ever wanted to eat an oversized Oreo? That’s basically what Klondike’s Cookies & Creme ice cream sandwich is.

It starts with two circular dark chocolate cookies – almost identical to those found on an Oreo, just way bigger.

The inside is a cookies and cream ice cream, which is a vanilla base with plenty of crunchy cookie crumbles throughout.

The ice cream is smooth and rich, and it tastes like true vanilla instead of the imitation stuff.

The chocolate cookies are more bittersweet and darker than you’d expect, which is great because it perfectly counteracts all that sweetness.

The chocolate cookies are also fairly crisp, unlike many ice cream sandwiches whose outside tends to be a bit soggy.

If you’re a cookies and cream or Oreo lover, you’ll find this Klondike product one of the best ice cream sandwiches on the market.

1. The Original Chipwich Ice Cream Sandwich

Chipwiches are the definitive ice cream sandwich, as far as I’m concerned. From flavor to texture to overall aesthetic, they just can’t be beat!

If you’ve never had a Chipwich, it’s basically two generously sized chip cookies with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream in between.

The dessert is then rolled in mini chocolate chips to finish it off.

Despite being frozen, the cookies here are chewy and fresh-tasting, with a fair amount of chocolate chunks inside.

The ice cream is thick, creamy, and full of vanilla flavor. There’s definitely more ice cream on this sandwich than all others on our list.

There’s a reason so many brands have their own version of the Chipwich – cookies and ice cream are an iconic combo, and this dessert allows you to enjoy two desserts in one.

All these factors make the Chipwich, in my opinion, the best ice cream sandwich of all time!

Conclusion

At the end of the day, all of these ice cream sandwiches on our list are stellar picks. They all contain ice cream and some form of wafer or cookie, so there’s nothing to dislike here.

To me, Chipwiches are the best store-bought ice cream sandwich money can buy.

Honorable mentions include Aldi’s stroopwafel sandwich for those who want something a little different and the Klondike classic ice cream sandwich if you want a simple and nostalgic dessert.
