5 Best Sandwiches at the Wegmans Sub Shop: Taste Test & Review

Subs and sandwiches are hallmarks of the Wegmans brand. I don’t know exactly what makes them so good – maybe it’s the bread, the fresh veggies or meat, or a combination of all of the above. Whatever it is, Wegmans sandwiches are one of the best ready-to-eat, prepared meals you can find at any grocery store.

I tried five of Wegmans’ most popular subs and sandwiches and ranked them from worst to best. These are all pretty good options, but if none of them strikes your fancy, you can always customize your sandwich at the Wegmans sub shop.

5. Beef on Weck

First on my list is the Beef on Weck. Wegmans makes this sandwich with seasoned roast beef, leaf lettuce, and tomato slices.

The bread used here is a kimmelweck roll, which is similar to a kaiser roll and features coarse salt and bits of carraway on top. Sauce-wise, there’s horseradish mayonnaise with a dash of black pepper for a bit of heat.

Roast beef is usually not my go-to sandwich meat because it can be dry, but I can’t resist this Wegmans sandwich. They make theirs super flavorful and moist, and it has the same texture as more classic deli meats like ham and turkey.

The horseradish mayo brings some creaminess to the equation and just a hint of spice, while the tomato and lettuce bring the freshness.

Speaking of freshness, my only complaint about this sandwich is that sometimes when I buy it, the lettuce is browned around the edges because it’s been sitting in a case all day. It doesn’t change the taste of the sandwich, but it definitely brings a damper aesthetics-wise.

4. Chicken Caesar Ciabatta Sandwich

This Wegmans sandwich is a crunchy, flavorful, and seriously refreshing lunch or dinner candidate. It’s made with lemon garlic chicken breast, strips of bacon, romaine lettuce, caesar dressing, and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.

The Chicken Caesar Sandwich is served on ciabatta bread, which is super crusty (so crusty that it’s a bit difficult to chew at times). The chicken breast here is fresh and juicy with a bright, lemony flavor.

Unlike the Beef on Weck sandwich I just told you about, the lettuce in this sandwich is always fresh, green, and crispy. The caesar dressing acts as a sauce and brings some tang and saltiness to the mix.

My only complaint here is that the bacon in this sandwich is always too soggy for me. I prefer crispy, smokey bacon, and while this bacon is definitely smokey, it’s pretty chewy.

3. Danny’s Favorite Sub

Danny’s Favorite is a sub named after Danny Wegman, who is a former Wegmans CEO. This sub is made with all of Danny’s favorite ingredients. Meat-wise, there’s salami, capicola, and spicy ham.

There’s also provolone cheese, lettuce, and tomato slices. You can order your sub on white, seeded, wheat, everything, or ciabatta bread. You can customize further by choosing whichever sauce you’d like, but I recommend the oil and vinegar blend with a dash of Italian spices.

If you love deli meat, this is the Wegmans sub for you. There’s a lot of salty goodness with just a little bit of spice. If you like your sub on the tangier side, try adding banana peppers, pickles, and some hot pepper spread.

2. Meatball Sub

I’m usually more of a cold sub person, but that’s thrown out the window when it comes to a meatball sub. Wegmans’ Meatball Sub is made with the bread of your choice (I usually go for plain white), Italian meatballs, your choice of cheese, and tomato sauce.

I usually go for mozzarella on this sub, but provolone also pairs well with the combination. If you’re not eating your sub right away, heat it up when you get home – the cheese usually isn’t particularly melty at first heat-up.

I also add a bit of extra marinara to my sub if I’m bringing it home since the sauce gets soaked up by the bread if you don’t eat it right away.

These meatballs have a great flavor and texture. They’re a little bit sweet, a tad salty, and have the perfect amount of garlic and Italian herbs mixed in. There’s a generous amount of meatballs on each sub, too. I ordered a small size, and it had three full-sized meatballs.

1. Spicy Turkey Avocado Sandwich

Finally, we’ve made it to the best Wegmans sandwich. Their Spicy Turkey Avocado Sandwich has been my favorite for over a year now. It’s definitely pricey (it’ll set you back $12.50, at least near me), but it’s the perfect lunch when you’re having a bad day and need something special to cheer you up.

This sandwich comes on 6-seed bread and is filled with layers of oven-roasted turkey breast, havarti cheese, guacamole, spicy mayo, and Boston lettuce. It’s finished with a dash of Cyprus sea salt for added flavor.

The mix of guacamole and spicy mayo gives the sandwich a super creamy texture, which is only boosted by the buttery havarti cheese slice. The turkey has a slightly smokey flavor and pairs beautifully with the earthy seed bread.

I wouldn’t categorize this sandwich as “spicy,” though. I think they use that descriptor because of the spicy mayo inside, but it’s really just more of a slight kick.

This Wegmans sandwich reminds me of a classic turkey and cheese sandwich from childhood but elevated to incorporate more interesting flavors, ingredients, and textures. Like I said, it’s a bit overpriced, but I think the splurge is worth it once in a while for a truly great-tasting sandwich.
