Review: McDonald’s Grandma McFlurry

Following the success of the Grimace Shake in 2023, it looks like McDonald’s is vying for the title of “Best Sweet Treat of the Summer” again this year. The restaurant chain announced that it would debut the Grandma McFlurry on May 21 but didn’t reveal too much about the flavoring other than it features “a delicious syrup and chopped, crunchy candy pieces”. As soon as the Grandma McFlurry was available, I headed to my local McDonald’s to try it. Let’s find out if this dessert is a pleasant stroll down memory lane or a treat that needs to retire!

Taste Test

Grandma McFlurry – $5.09

When I ordered the Grandma McFlurry, the woman working at the window referred to it as the “Crunchy McFlurry.” I had no idea why she would call it that until a few moments later when she handed it to me. As you can see in the picture, this McFlurry contains lots of chunks!

The chunks have a butterscotch taste and a toffee-like texture, but they’re not quick as sticky. I think it’s supposed to be reminiscent of those Werther’s Original hard butterscotch candy that every stereotypical grandma keeps in her purse.

The syrup swirl had a buttery, sweet flavor that tasted like a mix of caramel and birthday cake. McDonald’s really hit it out of the park with this treat – the crunchy bits are borderline addictive, and the flavor is sweet and nostalgic.

Grab or Pass?

I definitely recommend giving McDonald’s new Grandma McFlurry a try. Even if it doesn’t live up to the same memeable fame that the Grimace Shake had, I’ll be ordering this at least a handful of times this summer.

The McDonald’s app says the Grandma McFlurry is available until June 16, so hurry over and grab one before they’re gone.
