McDonald’s Bagel Breakfast Sandwiches: Taste Test & Review

Remember the good old days (pre-2020) when bagels were on the McDonald’s breakfast menu? Although it feels like ages ago, bagel sandwiches used to be a staple breakfast item at all McDonald’s locations in the US.

Now, four years later, McDonald’s has quietly begun re-introducing bagels to the breakfast menu. I’m one of the lucky customers who live near a McDonald’s that just started serving bagel sandwiches again. I picked up all three to taste test and let you know if they’re worth the cash once they make a country-wide comeback!

Taste Test

Sausage, Egg & Cheese Bagel – $5.29

Sausage, egg, and cheese might just be the most popular breakfast sandwich combo of all time. I’m not a huge fan of sausage, but I even admit that this trio hits the spot.

McDonald’s Sausage, Egg & Cheese Bagel sandwich consists of a sausage patty, a fluffy folded egg, American cheese, breakfast sauce, and, of course, a plain toasted bagel.

The sausage patty is salty, smokey, and a little bit sweet. I noticed it was a tiny bit caramelized on the outside, which is impressive for a fast-food patty. The bagel was well-toasted, and all the elements of the sandwich melded well for a savory bite.

Steak, Egg & Cheese Bagel – $5.29

The next one I tried was the Steak, Egg & Cheese Bagel. This sandwich is made with a steak patty, American cheese, a folded egg, breakfast sauce, and grilled onions. Since it’s made with a beef patty, it tasted like a breakfast-ized Quarter Pounder.

I really loved this bagel sandwich – it was probably my favorite of the trio. The folded egg was super fluffy and light, and the bits of caramelized onion brought some sweetness into the equation. The bagel was perfectly toasted here, too!

Bacon, Egg & Cheese Bagel – $5.29

Finally, I tasted the Bacon, Egg & Cheese Bagel. This sandwich is made with slices of crispy Applewood-smoked bacon, a folded egg, American cheese, and breakfast sauce.

The bacon was perfectly cooked – super crispy and hot with a strong crunch, which contrasted with the soft and creamy egg, cheese, and breakfast sauce.

This is the third time I’m mentioning “breakfast sauce,” so you might be wondering what it is. While I don’t know the exact ingredients, it’s basically just mayonnaise with a few spices and a dash of lemon flavoring. It serves as another vessel for extra creaminess in the sandwich and brings a little bit of brightness to cut through all that meat and dairy.

Grab or Pass?

I recommend grabbing any of these three bagel sandwiches if they’re sold at your local McDonald’s. I was impressed by the quality of the breakfast meat and the toastiness of the bagel. Plus, there’s a generous helping of cheese on all three sandwiches, which always helps.

At $5.29 per sandwich, this is one of the more expensive items on McDonald’s breakfast menu, but the taste and quality make it worth the price.
