Can You Order Groceries With Amazon In-Garage Delivery? (Yes, Here’s How)

Image: Amazon

Amazon introduced “In-Garage” delivery as a new way to receive packages in the safety of your garage. It addresses concerns like packages going missing or sitting outside in the rain until you get home.

With the increased demand for online grocery shopping, it was a matter of time before Amazon included groceries as a part of this service. So, can you order groceries with Amazon In-Garage delivery?

Yes, if you are an eligible Prime member, you can order groceries from Whole Foods or Amazon Fresh with in-garage delivery. Amazon has in-garage grocery delivery available in Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle, with plans to expand to other cities across the U.S.

Amazon recently announced the launch of in-garage grocery delivery on its website. In this article, we’ll cover how in-garage delivery works, how to set it up, and order groceries using this delivery option.

How Amazon In-Garage Delivery Works

Amazon in-garage delivery is a free service available for Prime members only. The delivery process is well-organized, and Amazon sends status updates to customers regularly. You can even watch the delivery live if your garage is equipped with a camera.

On the delivery day, Amazon sends a notification with a 4-hour delivery window to inform you about the expected delivery time. Just before the driver arrives, Amazon sends another notification to let you know that the driver is “Arriving Now.”

When the driver arrives at your garage, they will request to open the door using their handheld device. After Amazon confirms the package belongs to the correct address and the driver is near the garage, it will open the door and turn the camera on if you have one installed.

The driver puts the package inside your garage and waits until the door is securely closed. After the door is closed, Amazon sends a final notification to inform you that the delivery is complete and sends a video of it if you’re interested in watching it.

The good thing about Amazon In-Garage delivery is that everything happens under Amazon’s control. You don’t need to share your security code with drivers or unlock the door remotely when they arrive.

You may be wondering if in-garage delivery is safe after all. Amazon explains on the website that it gives drivers temporary one-time access and confirms their identity with multi-level authentication.

Amazon drivers go through extensive background checks and are instructed to go no more than five feet inside your garage. In-garage delivery is also backed by the “Key by Amazon Happiness Guarantee,” so if your product or property gets damaged during delivery, Amazon will work with you to resolve the issue.

Next, I’ll explain how to set up Amazon In-Garage delivery at home and start ordering groceries.

How to Set up Amazon In-Garage Delivery

Setting up Amazon In-Garage delivery requires a little bit of work, so I’ll break this into two parts – 1. Buying the myQ garage kit and installation, 2. Downloading and setting up the Key by Amazon app

1. Buying the myQ Smart Hub Kit and Installation

Amazon partners with “Chamberlain myQ” for in-garage deliveries. Chamberlain myQ is a smart home service that allows opening and closing garage doors remotely.

If you already have Chamberlain myQ installed and connected to your garage door, all you need to do is open the myQ app, go to the “Works with” section and enable “Key In-Garage Delivery” – And you’re all set!

If you don’t have Chamberlain myQ installed, you need to first buy the myQ Smart Garage Hub kit. The basic kit doesn’t come with a camera, though, so if you want to install a camera, you can buy the myQ Smart Garage Door Opener with Ring Stick Up Cam instead.

Both myQ Smart Garage kits work with most garage doors, but you should check your garage door’s compatibility before purchasing. You can confirm its compatibility here.

After purchasing the garage kit, you have two options – either install it yourself or request a professional installation through Amazon.

Once the installation is complete and the garage kit is up and running, it’s time to download “myQ” and “Key by Amazon” apps to complete the setup.

2. Download and Setup the “Key by Amazon” App

Follow the instructions below to download myQ and Key by Amazon apps to complete the In-Garage delivery setup:

  1. Download the “myQ app” and connect your garage opener (myQ has built-in connectivity, so adding your device should be easy – but make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi signal in your home)
  2. Download the “Key by Amazon app” and sign in with your Amazon account
  3. Tap “Let’s get started” and then “Set up a Residence”
  4. Link your “myQ” account to “Key by Amazon”
  5. Select the garage door opener you added using the myQ app previously
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen and enable in-garage delivery with Amazon

Once you enabled in-garage delivery in the “Key by Amazon” app, you’ll see it listed as a delivery option at checkout for Amazon purchases.

Amazon keeps expanding the cities they offer In-Garage delivery, so I’d recommend checking the website often to see the latest coverage. You can confirm the availability in your area by entering your address on the website.

How to Stop Amazon Delivering In Your Garage

If you placed an order with In-Garage delivery but changed your mind afterward, you can stop Amazon from delivering in your garage. Follow the instructions below on how to do it:

  1. Open the “Key by Amazon” app and tap the “Menu” (three horizontal lines at the top left corner)
  2. Tap the Home screen in the menu
  3. Tap “Block Access”
  4. Select how long you want to block access
  5. Tap “Block Delivery Access”

If you block access to your garage, Amazon still delivers the package but leaves it at your doorstep instead of putting it inside the garage.

In this article, we covered how Amazon In-Garage delivery works, how to set up the required garage kit, and order groceries using the in-garage delivery option.

In-Garage delivery resolves issues like packages going missing from your doorstep or staying in bad weather until you get home. For groceries, the weather conditions are even more important because perishable foods shouldn’t be exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period of time.

Even though Amazon packs perishable foods in temperature-controlled bags to prevent spoilage, In-Garage delivery gives you peace of mind knowing the groceries are safe in your garage when you’re away from home.
