Subway’s Footlong Cookie, Churro, and Pretzel Review
Subway’s newest menu items, the footlong cookie, churro, and pretzel, are taking over in a big way – literally and figuratively. They measure exactly 12 inches, which is a great idea considering Subway is famous for its footlong subs, but do these new sidekicks measure up in terms of taste? I bought and taste tested all three menu items on January 22, 2024, the day they launched nationwide. Here’s my full review.
Taste Test
Footlong Cookie
I’ll start by saying this: unfortunately, the Footlong Cookie isn’t worth the money or the calories – each cookie costs $5 and clocks in at 1440 calories.
This was the new “Footlong Sidekick” menu item I was most hopeful about. It looked promising, but the flavor was majorly lacking. There wasn’t that buttery, rich flavor that chocolate chip cookies are supposed to have. It had a cardboard-esque flavor while also being too sweet at the same time.
On the positive side, it did have a nice, soft texture, similar to a cookie bar. You definitely get a lot of cookie for $5, so if it had tasted good, it would’ve been a great deal.
Footlong Churro
The Footlong Churro ended up being my favorite of the three by leaps and bounds. This was made in collaboration with Cinnabon. It includes the same dusting found on Cinnabon’s Churro Swirls and is covered in sugar and Makara cinnamon.
The outside of the churro is crunchy and perfectly fried, while the inside is fluffy and warm. Despite the great texture, it tasted a bit stale, but it wasn’t offputting enough to keep me from eating the rest of it. It costs $2 and contains 190 calories.
Footlong Pretzel
This one was a real heartbreaker. For anyone out there who loves Auntie Anne’s, I need to warn you that it tastes nothing like the pretzels they serve at the mall.
Subway’s official press release states that the Footlong Pretzel “reimagines Auntie Anne’s buttery and salty classic, served with a side of honey mustard that takes each bite to another level.” I wasn’t given any honey mustard, but that didn’t even matter because I couldn’t have more than one bite of this, even if I wanted to.
It was so stale that I felt like I was doing a full-on jaw workout when I took a bite. Auntie Anne’s is known for its buttery, rich pretzels, but this was dry as a bone, yet it had an oddly chewy texture in some spots.
Overall, I was so disappointed by this pretzel. Not only did it taste nothing like Auntie Anne’s, but it didn’t taste like a pretzel at all. I know it sounds harsh, but I’d liken the flavor to stale bread that someone forgot to put salt in before baking. It costs $3 and contains 330 calories if you still decide to try it.
Grab or Pass?
As a whole, I would pass on Subway’s new Footlong Sidekicks. The cookie and the pretzel were some of the worst fast food I’ve had in a while. The saving grace, of course, was that churro.
I wouldn’t go out of my way to stop at Subway for a Footlong Churro, but I would probably grab one to go along with my sub, especially because it’s only $2. The footlong pretzel and the cookie? Well, despite their length, let’s just say that they fell short.
